Preparing Your Quilt for Machine Quilting
Sending your quilt for finishing to a long arm quilter can give your quilt a beautiful, polished look. However, there are a few things to consider before sending in your quilt.
Preparing the quilt top
Press your quilt top and backing. Proper pressing during quilt construction will make the final pressing simple to do.
Borders
It is important to apply your borders squarely. If borders are put on without accurate measurement, the top will not lay flat. Pleats and puckers can develop during the quilting process.
Helpful Hints:
To apply borders:
- Measure your pieced top (before adding borders). Lay your top on a flat surface and measure at least three different places across the width and length, not just at the edges.
- If these measurements are not equal, calculate the average measurement and use this number to cut the borders.
- Apply the border to the quilt top evenly by matching the center edge of the border with the center edge of the quilt. For larger quilts you may want to divide and mark your border and quilt into quarters or eighths. Pin the border to the quilt, easing the quilt to fit the borders as you sew.
- Fullness and/or puckers within a border cannot be quilted out. Remember, the flatter your quilt top lays, the better your finished quilt will look.
Please make sure all your seams are secure, especially along the edges and threads are clipped from the back of the quilt and the backing. Unclipped threads can show through lighter fabrics.
Remove all selvedge edges and press seam allowances to leave the least bulk at the seams.
Quilt Backing
There are many options when choosing the backing for your quilt. There are wide backing fabrics that you don't have to piece. Many quilters like to piece their backs with extra blocks or extra strips of leftover fabric from the quilt. Whichever method you choose to use, the quilt back should be 4 inches larger than the quilt top on all four sides. The backing should be square and the edges straight, no extra lopsided strips sticking out.
If the back needs to be pieced, cut off the selvedge before stitching and use at least a 1/2” seam allowance. Backs can be pieced horizontally or vertically.
